How to Prevent Summer Acne Breakouts
As a board-certified dermatologist, I notice more patients seeking help for acne during the summer months. The combination of heat, humidity, and increased outdoor activities often exacerbates acne, affecting not only physical health but also psychological and emotional well-being. Summer acne is triggered by sweat, oil, and bacteria clogging pores with skin oils. Additionally, increased sun exposure can thicken the outer layer of the skin, trapping even more oil and bacteria.
I love helping my patients overcome persistent acne, which can lead to feelings of sadness, frustration, and helplessness. With June being Acne Awareness Month, it’s an ideal time to explore the topic and discuss effective strategies to help.
Keep Your Face Clean
Gently cleansing your skin several times daily (especially after sweating) is essential, but be careful not to over-cleanse, as this can strip the skin of its natural oils and be a source of irritation. It’s also important to avoid cleansers that have multiple fragrances or other potentially harsh chemicals. “Fancy” or “complicated” products and skincare regimens are often just that – complicated and time-consuming – with no benefit and can potentially be detrimental to achieving clear skin. Always avoid heavy wiping or astringent pads, leading to dry and irritated skin and worsening acne.
Avoid Picking
This is one of the most important aspects of optimal skin care during an acne breakout. Manipulating pimples introduces bacteria from your hands to your skin, and most importantly, it can lead to discoloration and even scarring down the road. Opt for “pimple” patches to cover active pimples to reduce their duration and keep your hands away!
Choose the Right Skincare Products
While trying a few over-the-counter products can work for some (like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide), seeing a board-certified dermatologist early in your acne journey is generally advisable to get control of your breakouts and maintain optimal results. A dermatologist can advise about the type of acne you are experiencing and tailor your treatment regimen to combat this. Common initial treatment regimens include prescription-strength retinoid +/- topical antibiotics. It is of the utmost importance to get early control of acne to prevent long-term scarring and unwanted textural changes in the skin.
Stay Hydrated
Hydration plays a vital role in maintaining healthy skin in general. Drink plenty of water to flush out toxins and keep your skin hydrated. In addition to drinking water, use a daily moisturizer to help maintain your skin’s hydration without clogging pores. Even better, one of Dr. Findley’s favorite tips is starting your day with a moisturizer that has a built-in SPF so that you can protect your skin from the very moment you step outside of your home. This is important all year long!
Protect Your Skin from the Sun
While many think a tan looks healthy and might temporarily mask acne, sun exposure can worsen your acne. Indeed, it can have detrimental effects down the road, like increasing wrinkles and other signs of aging, and most importantly, raising your risk for skin cancer. Always use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Reapply every two hours or after each time you swim or sweat.
Hit the Showers
After spending time outdoors or engaging in physical activities, showering promptly can help prevent acne. Sweat-soaked clothes and lingering sweat on your skin can contribute to breakouts. Use a gentle body wash to clean areas prone to acne, such as your back and shoulders.
Be Mindful of What You Eat
Diets high in sugar and dairy have been linked to increased acne breakouts in some people. It is always advisable to eat a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins and try to maintain self-awareness to identify any personal triggers for your acne.
Following these tips, you can enjoy summer without worrying about acne breakouts. Consistency is critical, and maintaining a good skincare routine tailored to the season can make all the difference. Happy Acne Awareness Month!
